However, Charmin Essentials is a surprising favorite. While this roll is not the most comfortable or durable, it is a durable and well-balanced device.

Aside from being clear, what we like most about Reel is that the textured 4″ x 4″ square wipes are soft enough to feel comfortable on sensitive areas, but tough enough to not wipe with your hands. During testing, the coil did not break, roll off, or dissolve in just 18 seconds.
As silly as it sounds, we also like the look of Reel compared to other bamboo toilet paper because it looks like “regular” toilet paper, whereas other undyed toilet paper has a dark brown tint that looks like it belongs in the bathroom at the campsite. The individually wrapped rolls come in chic recycled packaging and look good in a toilet paper holder. If you’re trying to create a greener home but still value your aesthetics, bamboo toilet paper rolls are a great choice.
This single ply toilet paper was our second favorite of all the products we tested. In terms of texture, the roll is very comfortable to use. It’s also surprising how thick and durable it is, considering it’s single-ply paper. When we ran a square piece of it over an uneven surface, it tore worse than our top choice. However, you can’t go wrong with Cottonelle Ultra CleanCare, which almost won the award for best results.
This product is another favorite due to its pleasant texture and durability. This paper is just as durable as our top pick, and almost as comfortable for everyday use. When we rubbed a square piece of it onto some rough surfaces, there was a small amount of residue left behind, but not much. Ultimately, this toilet paper is both durable and soft, but not as comfortable as the Charmin Ultra Soft over multiple uses.

Quilted Northern is the only traditional 3-ply toilet paper we’ve tested, and it’s truly luxurious. However, the paper does not remain unchanged in terms of durability and top-tier Charmin capabilities. While it had good grip on rough surfaces, it didn’t perform very well in everyday testing. Additionally, it takes one minute and forty seconds to dissolve in water, making it the second longest dissolving product on our list after Charmin Essentials.
Either way, this is a great toilet paper roll and ultimately one of the most comfortable rolls we’ve ever tested. If you’re looking for a luxurious, comfortable bolster and don’t want to go the Charmin route, we definitely recommend trying the Quilted Northern Ultra Plush.
This two-ply toilet paper has a pleated texture that promises to completely remove residue, but unfortunately, we found that this was not the case. In our daily testing, this cotton roll was soft and performed well, but in objective testing, the paper tore slightly and left marks. However, Cottonelle is septic tank safe and made from sustainable forest fibers.
Even though the Angel Soft is dual-layer, we found it to be a bit thin, making it less durable than the competition. In our subjective testing, we also found that Angel Soft felt less comfortable than some of our top brands after extended use. It also doesn’t stay wet for long, dissolving in just 30 seconds. However, it is not on par with the competition, but it is a decent toilet paper roll. You could do worse.
Target’s Up & Up Soft & Strong toilet paper is the weakest of all the store brands we compared. It rips a little on rough surfaces, but still gets the job done. In our personal tests, the roll was quite comfortable, but not as durable as we would have liked. If you’re a Target fan and want to save money, the Up & Up brand is worth checking out. If not, then the store brand is not worth going out of your way to buy.

Testing consists of several components. We first tested toilet paper the old-fashioned way: by using it regularly for several weeks. This subjective testing allows us to form a less clinical opinion on the durability and comfort of each roll. To do this, we rubbed one square of each roll onto rough surfaces, including cast iron skillets and rough outdoor rugs. We note any deposits, residues or breaks caused by moderate pressure on the rough surface.
