‘Napkincore’ Takes Red Carpets Over: Why Are Stars Dressed Like Napkins?

This year’s Oscars red carpet was littered with sequins, sparkling gems and hints of old Hollywood glamor, but it was Emma Stone’s stunning ruffled Louis Vuitton gown that made the actor stand out from the crowd. To John Vascavage, it reminded him of something much more mundane: napkins.
Sharing a video of the Best Actress winner cheerfully storming into the awards ceremony after losing track of time, Waskovic laughed on X (formerly Twitter) and said: “Silver Napkin Tom realizes they’re about to miss the tip in “Be Our Guest”.

But Stone wasn’t the only star dressed to the nines on Sunday. Kim Kardashian stepped out in an all-white Balenciaga look with a pointed bustier at the Vanity Fair Oscar Party as fashion writer Emily Kirkpatrick. In doing so, it has led to numerous comparisons to “napkins on a plate in a fancy restaurant.”
Meanwhile, Emily Ratajkowski showed up in a bold Jacquemus dress with an angular, boxy bodice that wouldn’t look out of place with her dinner plate. Seems out of place. (One person broke the news on Instagram: “Brought to you by Bounty.”)
HauteLeMode fashion critic Luke Meagher told Page Six Style that he’s noticed an increase in these paper pieces on red carpets and runways, noting the “napkin-like dresses” in Onitsuka Tiger’s fall 2024 collection and especially the recent Courrèges show.
”Celebrities may see this as a new way to wear the tailored pieces that have become a red carpet staple of late, but with a twist – although I’m not quite sure it’s worth it yet,” he said.
To be clear, the napkin was a trend long before the Oscars; Past Life star Greta Lee rocked an edgy Leah look at the Independent Spirit Awards last month, and Kat Graham rocked Stefan’s Grammys red carpet: “Give the gift of an elegant origami swan napkin” (quote from one delighted Instagram user ) by Laurent Haute Couture.
The real question, of course, is whether a look that seems designed to suck on dry lips can catch on with the general public. Meagher thinks they can.
”It’s easy to replicate this trend by creating your own style by turning a scarf or large piece of fabric into a skirt or top,” he noted, before showing off some of his signature shades.
